Cyberinfrastructure for the CENSAM Project

CENSAM Cyberinfrastructure group (PI: Jud Harward, MIT CECI Associate Director) has developed a Cyberinfrastructure framework with three components: CENSAM data repository (CDR), CENSAM Cyberinfrastructure (CCI) and Provenance system. The CDR is used for archiving, managing, sharing and plotting individual projects sensor data. The CCI registers sensor data among heterogeneous projects domains and uses antologies to enable cross-domain searches. The Provenance system is a web-based process for tracking and managing geo-spatial analysis of sensor data.

X3D Earth

March 2007 - Present

Developing ‘X3D Earth’, that is the standards-based 3D visualization infrastructure for all manner of real-world objects and information constructs in a geospatial context ( Contributed to standardization activities of Web3D Consortium as a consortium member with prof. Don Brutzman who is a co-chair of the X3D Earth work group of the Web3D Consortium.
Developed a multi-resolution X3D geospatial component terrain tile set generator that is being used for the server-side code base of prototype X3D Earth globe implementation, the first X3D Earth web service, several X3D Earth globe implementation including terrain and bathymetry, and a geospatial content creation framework using X3D geospatial component.
Established collaborative research environment with NPS, Web3D Consortium and KAIST for X3D interoperability in various fields include CAD and 3D GIS.

Coast guard vulcan simulator

Developing the 'Coast Guard Vulcan Simulator'. Major contribution to motion generation and VR effects of Vulcan simulation, and consulting 3D visualization for the training simulation, sponsored by Korea Coast Guard.

Mars exploration 2020

Developed the VR effect system for 'Mars Exploration 2020', including the motion effect using 2 degree of freedom motion chair, and lighting control using DMX512. Sponsored by National Science Museum of Korea.

Developed the 'Science and Cultural Experience System using Virtual Reality Technology'. Applied to 'Exploration into the human body', sponsored by National Science Museum of Korea. Developed the real-time motion generation techniques from high-resolution 3D animations and VR effect systems for simulating wind and water effects.

Image-based modeling and rendering technology for large-scale urban environment

July 2003 - February 2006

Developed the 'Image-based Modeling and Rendering Technology for Large-scale Urban Environment' used to modeling virtual environment of Daejeon, Korea, using GIS data sponsored by Information and Telecommunication Research Center. Developed effective way of modeling and rendering large urban area, where exists numerous buildings, using aerial photos and digital maps.

Developed 'Object VR Technology' sponsored by PartDB Co., Ltd.
Director of Virtual Reality Team at PartDB Co. Ltd's research laboratory. The object VR technology was used to build commercial website of manufacturing companies.

Sports helicopter VR simulator

August 2000 - February 2003

Executive researcher of Physical Reality Team at Virtual Reality Research Center (VRRC). Developed the 'Sports Helicopter VR Simulator' sponsored by Ministry of Science and Technology. Implemented and integrated 5 channel immersive display, 4 degree of freedom motion platform, 3D sound, and haptic devices (a collective stick, a cyclic stick and two pedals). Also contributed to design and building virtual environment of small city for the flight simulation.
